Meet The Energy Geek

I'm Wes Golomb, and I've spent 34 years teaching people that the energy transition isn't a technology problem. It's a political and structural one.

For 24 years I taught energy and sustainability at Northern Essex Community College, then spent a decade at Lakes Region Community College, where I founded and directed the first Energy Services Technology degree program in the Northeast. Every graduate of that program left with a living-wage job.

Along the way I served as New Hampshire's Energy Conservation Coordinator at the Public Utilities Commission, was appointed by the Governor to the state's Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Energy Board, and spent 12 years on the board of the NH Sustainable Energy Association. For the past 20 years I've chaired the Deerfield Energy Committee, where we've put solar on dozens of rooftops and, this fall, on our own town offices, thanks to a $330,000 federal grant I wrote to make it happen.

What I've learned, in three decades of classrooms, boardrooms, and town halls, is that the barriers standing between us and a clean energy future rarely have anything to do with the technology itself. The tools work. The question is always who benefits, and who pays. That question is at the center of everything I write and teach, and it's the heart of my new book, below.
